If an opponent attacked a system and almost took it out then you change the names of all the systems, they may be unable to remember exactly which one they were fighting, position-wise. Seems like a dirty trick, to me. :) (AI wouldn't have that problem since they would be referring to an ID, most likely.)

I'm not seeing this as a problem. Its WAR. Spoils go to the victor. If someone sneaks in and takes a weak colony real fast and changes the name to F*ckYou or IPIssonu (I piss on you) then I can see it as a problem.

Knightdt is correct. Only YOU should see the name changes.

Think of it this way. If China took Hawaii and renamed it "Tiny China" and the Chinese started calling it that. Would Americans call it Tiny China or Hawaii?
If we evolved from monkeys? Then when do we stop being human and become something else?

After 400 years? I think they will start to call it Little China ... ;)

It can be dangerous and difficult from game code. For example for diplomacy. Ok. AI will be ok with system ID's but when for example 12 human players will be playing and discussing 1 star system, what then? It can be confusing. We was thinking about this in our team and some kind of compromise is closest to our hears now.

When you'll be able to rename colony?
- when you are first colonizing a world (like in MoO2)
- when you take over colony and decide to instantly kill all people living there (by chemical weapon or something) and have it colonized by your people.
- when your last prisoner of conquered colony will be assimilated into your society. (it will take some time, so colony change name will occur when you truly take over that colony)
- when you take over colony, which someday belongs to you and have different name.

- except this - always, but only if last colony name change occur at least 20 turns ago.

We can provide a list of older colony names.. so when Americans will conquer Little China again, they may rename it back to Hawaii again.
Also, seeing Hawaii named Little China will have influence on you to again take over this colony :)

And if some player will be creating offensive star system names you will lower his online player evaluation - when you will be playing online. So.. it shouldn't be popular, because if you will be starting an online game, you will be able to disallow such people to join it.

Very reasonable and thought out. :D

What's the plan there? Anonymous reporting (for such-and-such reason) perhaps? Just thinking out loud here, but... hmm. You could have a list of words etc that can't be used when parental controls are enabled, and players who sneak in more offensive names & are reported get blocked from parental-control-enabled matchups etc.
Clear ether!

This renaming plan seems like a great compromise. Like you said, seeing one of your worlds renamed to something else would get you to want to retake it all the more.
