Special Planets

Postby Calavero » Mon Apr 04, 2016 8:49 pm

I want to ask our community about your ideas for very rare, very special planet types which can be present in M.O.R.E. For example in Master of Orion 2 such special planet (or rather whole system) was Orion (but it was present in every game).

Our special planets will be very rare in galaxy. There may be 1 unique planet for 1000 standard planets, so you may have 1,2.. maybe 3... or 0 of those type in your game.

This special planet may give you some advanced technology, or be super rich with minerals (for example factor 10 mineral rich, when standard very rich planets have mineral factor 5, and very poor factor 1) . Other example may be planet which at first glance is quite ordinary, but when fired with stellar converter, explosion will destroy whole star system, etc.

Do you have some interesting ideas for some strange/unique planets?

Planet with threat like Aliens (from Alien) or Wraiths from Stargate or replicators (also from Stargate)

First will be very resistive, agrresive and rapid population growth. Second - simmiliar but has similiar traits to your species - because they are your mutated citizens. Third one will replicate by eating enemy ships or buildings and automatically gets all assimilated technologies. So the stronger empire they fight, the more dangerous they are.

That will be a threat for a whole galaxy. However in some situations you may find a trace to the planet where is hidden a technology which may help you to weaken a threat to you (like weapon which may dissipate structure of replicators or prevent it from eating your structures/technology). In the game you may have a chance to find such weapon, so you can not find it, you may find a technology which may help you fight with threat, or even the technology which may destroy the threat.

So you never know does you will met the threat, how big it will be or even do you have any help to fight with it.

Maybe your last chance will be an ascendence or leaving the galaxy and find a new home..

Second kind of the special planets may be a planets on which you may accidentaly influence for the whole galaxy. Something like your scientist will find an omega particle (Star Trek) and by experimenting they may weaken or even destroy the structure of a space. So you can get a galaxy wide modifier to the FTL travel (usually negative) or even you may disable FTL travel in the whole galaxy (at least for some time). Maybe you may find a technology to overcome the effect of the accident.

Or you may accidentaly open a wormhole(s) to the new galaxy. The new galaxy may be unhabitated, may be there other empires (weaker, similiar or stronger) or even they may be one galaxywide empire which technology is far more advanced than a technology of any empire in your galaxy. So you have a hope that this empire is peacefull in not... there may be a hope if there is a way to close the wormoles, if not... run Forest run...

Some time ago I added post on new MoO forum, titled "Please add gameplay-redefining events!", and I I wrote something like this:

somewhere in the universe there is a planet with a very old temple; If any race finds this planet, all the players can see it on the map; If any race keep the planet incessantly by any number of turns (ex. 20), will get a lot of coins.

I still believe this idea.

Regardless of whether imagine the planet like Solaris where the whole planet is a living creature (or something like that). This planet could affect the unit: destroy them, double it or grant a temporary bonuses.

Or think about the planet, the colonization of which something happened and a large part of the galaxy is contaminated - There can only run race, which discovered the special technology.

IMHO, idea of "Special Planets" will come true, when we combine it whit different rare events beginning at the time of discovery of these planets. So, Special Planets exploration generates variables affecting of gameplay and victory conditions, in a much stronger way, than simple, common events happening in the game.

Thank you for your ideas. We will discuss all of them in the near future and we may use some of them in our game. If you have other ideas - please share them with us.

But there are anyway already many special planets, which are particularly well, but which are guarded by the space monsters. :?
There is a god and HE LOVES YOU! Look at the bible, John 3:16.

Some of those planets (systems) will be guarded by monsters, others not ;)

•artificial planets wich u dont know about when u colonize them. only later, years after the colonization an event happen (some of your citizen fall in a deep cave, discovering a large underground System of tunnels). from there on u have to send one of your ships, with a scientist lap on it, to study these tunnels for years and years.
who know's what u may find? ;)

•planets with a rare type of flower who may influence (add a trait) to your system governour and if its a scientist u may get a unique techresearch opportunity out of it.

• Yggdrasil world. a forest planet. where the forest is one living and breathing organism (like in the saga of seven suns from Kevin j. anderson)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_J._Anderson_bibliography

• a planet out of diamond (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/ ... Earth.html) wich can be harness only in the super late game?

i dont know if ur looking for these kinds of special planet ideas. if so i can crank out alot more idea's :D

I was thinking about this idea too! It's nice.. but how it will influence the game? Maybe lower multiplication of colonist due to many killed by this living forest?

VoodooDog wrote:• a planet out of diamond

Ok.. so not like "additional resources" +3 to mining, but it'll give +20 to money? ;)

If you have other ideas - sure, let us know about them! :) but please try to imagine how they may affect the game.

i was thinking that the forest planet isnt hostile at all. on the contrary, its a save place for every organism who does not try to harm it (use to many industry on it?). this forest will give a great deal to the planetary defense.
in the books i mentioned this forest can even withstand strong orbital bombardment, provides lots of food (obv) and.. who knows, maybe gives you some Kind of organic tree research tech once you life long enough on it?

to the diamond planet, no ressource bonusses here. but maybe money, yes.
maybe even kinetic weapon +?

ok, so this forest planet will give defensive bonus against orbital bombardment and ground combat. Food bonus too. Ok.. nice :)
Any more ideas anyone?
