Visual Trade Lanes

Postby May Player » Mon Nov 12, 2012 10:02 am

Once trade is established between planets, colonies and other empires, it would be nice to zoom-in and see little stansports flying over planets and along the visual trade paths connecting various planets. It would bring a nice visual effect of a living space in the empire.

Good idea. I would like to see the borders too, like in Civ 5.

Should it be just a visual effect or also have strategic relevance, like that you can block trading routes or even raid them?

Both. Candy for the eye, but also indicator if the trade line got blocked (the tiny transport vessels would disappear)

Agree with all that's been said so far.

Armada 2526 has this feature implemented in almost the exact fashion described in the OP, and it works well. It allows the player to see at a glance where the trade routes are at, while simultaneously giving the players (both human and AI) an idea as to which planets are most worth blockading (so as to hurt an adversary's income). Would like very much to see something similar in MORE.

StarDrive has this already implemented. You can see some playable demos on youtube. Check links from this forum:

This game might be great. I think M.O.R.E. team should watch it closely and take good things from it.
I would support it on kickstarter immediately if it would still be on that phase.

Trade lanes are eye candy, but empire borders is critical. As it can draw a line to show incursions into your empire space. Clearly can make or break diplomatic deals.

Trade lanes themselves may just be a request for eye-candy, but there must be a means of blockading or disrupting trade. Preferably for more than just a single planet at a time.

A 'sphere of influence' projected by either a fleet (proportional to size or to largest ship size or some formulae thereof) or around a planet or system could indicate a range over which a fleet is capable of blocking a planet or even a set of planets and thereby disrupting trade. Of course a friendly fleet could project a similar sphere, capable of re-opening the affected planets, at the risk of provoking the enemy fleet to battle.

Needless to say, Thangulhad's remarks on marking empire borders is an absolute necessity as well.

I agree about Thangulhad's remarks.

The borders are nicely done in Stardrive. It might be a good idea to have an option to hide them, though.

Borders's a nice thing to see, but it was also perfectly clear in MoO2 with just the color of the names of controlled stars, no-one missed it.
About trade blockading, because space is so vast, I mean BIG, there's no way to succeed blockading it, only maybe slow it down, military fleets cost too much to just hunt some traders around.
A sphere of influence is a nice idea, but this would only cut some of your trade, to cut it completely you would have to blockade a system.
