Use a Trait based system please.

The old MOO2 system was basically a leveling stat with a picture.Modern games like Totalwar use a trait based system that add personality to a character.You have standard birth traits and then new traits appear due to ingame events.This is a much more immersive system.

Those are fun. For example, if you use a fleet commander to destroy an enemy colony he could earn a ruthlessness trait. This would give him various positives and negatives in addition to other traits.

I like this idea a lot. I like it even better if there's no sure thing -- too man retreats might give you "gunshy" (a mostly negative trait, lets say) but it might also give you "cautious" (a slightly positive trait).

In the same vein, too many crushing victories might give "Overconfident".. /evil grin
